aww man.. today the body of Cecilia Zhang was found in a park at Mississauga Rd and Eglington...please put a capital C in front of your MSN name in memory of Cecilia...go to www.cbc.ca for more details
The Internet is a wonderful thing; it's created many connections between far-flung groups, bringing together people whose physical separation would have made any relationship impossible even twenty years ago. However, there is a fundamental disconnect between what people believe is possible and what can actually happen on the Internet. One need look no further than online petitions to see that fact. Add that to the proliferation of hoax emails and you can easily get the impression that people will believe anything if they read it on the Internet.
Worse than the apparent gullibility of the populace is that exposure to the Internet has made people fundamentally lazy. It's possible to do just about everything one needs to do over the Internet; nobody feels the need to get out and actually do anything any more. This is shown effectively in the above quote.
Certainly, Cecilia's death is saddening, but the non-lengths to which people are willing to go because of this sadness is worrying. Rather than attending a place of worship to pray for Cecilia or her family, people would rather make a small cosmetic change to their online avatar. Nobody wants to admit that they are fundamentally apathetic, so false sympathy is the rule of the day.
